An overview of colonoscopy, including when it may be recommended, the procedure, and recovery.
A colonoscopy is a routine procedure used to examine the lining of the large bowel (colon) and rectum. It may be recommended to investigate symptoms such as rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, iron deficiency or unexplained weight loss, as well as for bowel cancer screening and ongoing surveillance.

When is a Colonoscopy Recommended?
A colonoscopy may be recommended to investigate symptoms affecting the bowel or as part of bowel cancer screening and surveillance. Common reasons for referral include:
- A persistent change in bowel habits, including diarrhea, constipation, or looser stools.
- Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool.
- Persistent or unexplained abdominal pain, cramping, or bloating.
- Unexplained iron deficiency or anemia.
- A positive bowel cancer screening test.
- A known or family history of bowel cancer or known polyps.
- Surveillance monitoring for inflammatory bowel disease.
What Happens During a Colonoscopy?
A thin, flexible camera is carefully guided into the large bowel, allowing the bowel lining to be examined in detail.
- If polyps are identified, they can often be removed during the same procedure to reduce the risk of future malignant transformation.
- Small tissue samples (biopsies) may be taken for further examination under a microscope if required.
- The procedure is usually completed within around 30 minutes and is performed under sedation to help ensure your comfort.
It is typically performed as a day procedure, and most patients are able to return to their usual activities the following day. A follow-up appointment will be arranged to discuss the findings, any pathology results, and recommended next steps if further treatment or surveillance is required.
